Sri Lanka name their 2016 Test Squad while England collect more information

It is understandable that Sri Lanka have named their test squad much earlier than England, they are of course travelling, but England are waiting to the last possible opportunity to name theirs. This is partly due to the fact that Trevor Ballis has been on a break in Australia after touring South Africa and then to India for the T20 World Cup. So I don't think anyone can say that he has not earned some time down under with his family. An advantage of course of waiting is that it certainly keeps candidates on their toes and gives more time to look at early season form, so its probably a win win situation.

The date for the squad announcement is 7am on May 12th  then the team meet up on May 16th with the 1st Test starting at Headingly on Thursday May 19th. (Tickets still available)  So it is tight but given the circumstances sounds fair enough.

So who is in? and who might be in? Well there is not expected to be major changes, but the batting line up still has a few question marks, of course they do have to fill the place unfortunately left by James Taylor so it does look like someone old or new will get a chance.

Likely Line Up

1 Cook
2 Hales
3.Vince or Compton
4 Root
5 Ballance or Bell
6 Stokes
7 Bairstow
8 Ali
9 Broad
10 Finn
11 Anderson
12 Woakes

Just Batting Positions Three and Five and could well be permed Two from these Four.

Lyth and Robson both have been tried will probably have to do more to get another chance. On the radar but playing in Div two is Bell Drummond. Is that controversial? It has to make a difference though, and he is not the only one, Tom Westley and Jamie Porter both playing well for Essex to name just another two. There are others.

So that is 12 places, I want one more as a back up bowler that is more of a very recent problem due to injuries. The back up for Finn Anderson Broad is now a lot thinner on the ground then it was. Top candidates Wood Footitt and Topley are all out for one reason or another, but could return shortly so its not a long term problem. But that does make the 13th man slot interesting. Even more so with the selectors watching 25 year old Jake Ball rip though the Yorkshire top order, perhaps a bit lucky with the wicket of Lyth, but bowling beautifully. Could it be perfect timing for the lad?

So some important decisions to be made, and this should be a very enjoyable summer for England with Sri Lanka and Pakistan the visitors.

The Sri Lankan Squad is as follows
Angelo Matthews (c), Dhananjaya Silva, Dasun Shanaka, Dhammika Prasad, Dilruwan Perera, Dimuth Karunaratne, Dinesh Chandimal (vice-capt), Dushmantha Chameera, Kaushal Silva, Kusal Mendis, Lahiru Thirimanne, Milinda Siriwardana, Niroshan Dickwella, Nuwan Pradeep, Rangana Herath, Shaminda Eranga, Suranga Lakmal.
